Student strike for three days in January '76 when they fired a bunch of our teachers and cut all our electives. Sing '77--Death Hertz: my experience as JB Hertz in the Brudner Brothers extravaganza murder mystery musical that, by all accounts, should have WON.

  • Favorite Stuy moment: Its kind of corny. Perhaps it was taking a subway ride home with Gaspar Fabricante, and hear him boast about the Stuy elite. Even though, I didn't have the best grades, his words made me believe that there is something special about Stuyvesant, and that has inspired me to strive for more and not be complacent. I think this is my Stuyvesant legacy, and I don't think my life would have been the same had I attended a neighborhood H.S. The late Dr. Richard Rothenberg said I would be running IBM, didn't happen yet, he was a good man.

  • Favorite Stuy moment: Frankly, the most "memorable" experience for me at Stuy, was when I dropped the base of the volleyball net-pole on my friend, Karen Anderson's foot, breaking her toe (the gym teachers had asked us to move the 400 pound thing!). The gym teachers had ME take Karen across the street to the emergency room at Beth Israel. That must have been in the old days, before liability. But, I have also have vivid memories of sitting in Frank McCourt's Creative Writing class, listening to his One Man Show/Stream of Consciousness, while students lolled, barefoot, in the windows, writing bizarre poetry and strumming guitars. When I entered Stuy I was contemplating a job in plumbing, and emerged a future lawyer and would-be novelist. Go figure. I also thank Stuy and its location for causing this Queens boy to develop a lifelong fascination with the people, cultures, literature and history of lower Manhattan. I truly wish that everyone could have the educational and social experiences I had at Stuy, if they wanted them.

  • Favorite Stuy moment: This falls under the category of "What Was He Thinking???" As Editor-in- Chief of our yearbook, our faculty advisor, Mr. Rattner, did not want to be interrupted to sign a pass each time we needed to get someone out of class. So he wrote out the pass, left the name of the student being excused from class blank, the date blank and my signature blank. He signed it and Xeroxed it and gave my as many copies as I wanted--My signature was the one that was required to get people out of class. Ok--fess up--how many of you "legally" cut class with me when we were supposed to be working on the yearbook??

  • Favorite Stuy moment: I don't know that there was any one experience that stands out in my mind. When I think of Stuyvesant, I think of the whole range of experiences that are so unique for an American high school student -- riding the subway to school with my friends every day, hanging out in the city (I'm from Queens, so that was a big deal), being exposed to an incredibly diverse group of students, being at a school where it was okay to be a nerd, and where the only peer pressure you felt was the pressure to break 1300 on your SATs, etc. It wasn't until college and the "real world" that I realized just how special and how different our experience was from those of most high school kids.

  • Favorite Stuy moment: There are a few but one of the most memorable occurred during Mr. Mayorkas' Spanish class freshman year 7th period. Even then I was dedicated to the advancement of medical knowledge and spent my lunch hour performing research on botanical anti-glaucoma agents and studying the aerodynamics of discoid hydrocarbon derivatives. Got called on to put my home work on the board and the gentleman in front of me bailed me out by lending me his. Couldn't understand why Mr. Mayorkas accused me of copying another's assignment, a charge which I firmly denied. Wasn't sure why everyone was laughing. Took me some time but I guess enough Spanish had trickled through my cortex to eventually figure out that the assignment was a list of personal questions. I had written the following on the black board:
    1) Me llamo Pedro Wayne
    2) Yo vivo en Greenpoint Brooklyn.
    3) Imagine how flattered I was that Mr Mayorkas had remembered that I was from Richmond Hill, Queens!
